Although SIP panels are increasingly being used in modern residential and commercial construction, there are still many misconceptions and prejudices about this construction method. Some are based on outdated information, others on ignorance or confusion with other materials. In this article, we debunk the most common myths about SIP construction.
Myth 1: SIP panels are weak and break easily.
Fact: SIP panels are extremely strong, despite their light weight. The combination of a rigid foam core and OSB outer layers results in a sandwich construction with high compressive and flexural strength. SIP panels are used successfully in regions with heavy snowfall, earthquakes and storms.
Myth 2: SIP homes do not “breathe” and are unhealthy
Fact: It is true that SIP constructions are very airtight, but this is actually an advantage for energy efficiency. With a well-designed ventilation system, such as balanced ventilation with heat recovery (HRV), air quality remains excellent. Airtight construction has become standard in modern passive and zero-energy houses.
Myth 3: SIP is a fire hazard
Fact: SIP panels comply with strict European fire safety standards. The OSB outer layers are treated with fire retardants, and the foam core (such as EPS or PUR) is self-extinguishing. In addition, airtight constructions limit the supply of oxygen in the event of a fire. With the correct finish, the fire risk is even lower than with traditional construction.
Myth 4: SIP construction is only for temporary or cheap housing
Fact: Although SIP is often used for fast and cost-efficient construction, it is also ideal for luxury villas, holiday homes, chalets and commercial buildings. High-end projects have been realised throughout Europe using SIP technology, including designer homes and sustainable hotels.
Myth 5: You cannot modify or hang anything on SIP walls.
Fact: You can attach elements to a SIP wall perfectly, as long as the installation is done correctly. There are techniques for hanging kitchen cabinets, radiators or even wall-mounted TVs, just like with a traditional wall. The key is good preparation and the use of suitable fasteners.
Myth 6: SIP is unknown and therefore risky.
Fact: SIP has been in use for almost 70 years and is used worldwide, from Canada and Scandinavia to Japan and Australia. In the Netherlands, SIP is still considered “new”, but that mainly means that it is an innovative choice. More and more architects and developers are recognising its advantages.
Myth 7: SIP panels are not sustainable
Fact: On the contrary. Thanks to their high insulation value and minimal thermal bridges, SIP homes ensure low energy consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions. In addition, the panels are recyclable and the construction will last for decades with minimal maintenance costs.
